Bio-refinery Users Panel

Ritz-Carlton Ballroom

Bio-based plastics and bio-based chemicals offer an alternative solution to traditional, comparable products made from fossil oil and its derivatives. Bio-based plastics and chemicals also offer sustainability benefits over their fossil based counterparts, such as a reduced CO2 footprint, reduced dependency on fossil resources, and additional end-of-life options. Bio-plastics can also offer improved functionalities and performance in many cases.

Over the last few years, many governments have begun to support and promote the idea of a bioeconomy and many of the world’s largest consumer brands have begun to employ bioplastics in the packaging of their products. R&D teams continue to work on new production processes that support the production commercialization of biochemicals and bioplastics made from alternative feedstocks, such as biomass (often referred to as cellulosic feedstocks or second generation feedstocks).

Industrial wood pellets can play a major role as a sustainable feedstock in this growing industry. This discussion will feature executives in the plastics and chemicals industry sharing insight on the potential for wood pellets as an alternative feedstock and the future for bio-based materials.
