Understanding the Renewable Energy Directive II – Policy and Process

Castellena Ballroom

The EU is currently debating how member states will meet their renewable energy targets to 2030 under the Paris Agreement. The policy driver for this takes the form of the Renewable Energy Directive (“RED II”) which was promulgated by the European Commission as part of its “Winter Package” at the end of 2016.

The European Commission’s proposal is currently making its way through the EU legislative process and is being debated separately in the European Parliament and within the European Council. This presentation will provide attendees with a fundamental understanding of the role biomass will play in helping Europe meet its 2030 targets as well as the complicated ongoing legislative process at play while the RED II is debated.

The United Kingdom (Pre and Post Brexit)

Castellena Ballroom

With the UK slated to leave the EU under Brexit in the next few years, what will it mean for the market that currently provides the most demand for sustainable biomass energy? This presentation will explore how the current subsidy regimes, Contracts for Difference and Renewables Obligations, will play out during Brexit as well as what potential new demand could be on the horizon for the UK. It will also explore issues that pellet producers, supply chain participants, and investors should be aware of as the UK makes its way through the Brexit process.

Exploring Opportunities for Wood Pellets to Help Power Corporate America

Castellana Ballroom

The private sector accounts for around half of the world’s electricity consumption. Switching this demand to renewables will accelerate the transformation of the global energy market and aid the transition to a low carbon economy. The global transition to a renewable energy system is accelerating and the price of renewables continues to fall, making them cost competitive with fossil fuels in many markets. This increased affordability, together with supportive policy initiatives, means that there is now a clear business case for renewable power, which is helping to grow corporate demand for renewables, including biomass, in all regions of the world.

Sustainably-sourced biomass, currently the only baseload renewable energy source, potentially has a major role to play in powering corporate America’s transition to renewables. This panel will include a robust discussion amongst academics, Chief Sustainability Officers of major corporations, and other experts on the potential market opportunity for wood pellets in this growing market.

Wood Pellets as Feedstock for Bio-Based Plastics and Chemicals – Examining Market Potential

Castellena Ballroom

Bio-based plastics and bio-based chemicals offer an alternative solution to traditional, comparable products made from fossil oil and its derivatives. Bio-based plastics and chemicals also offer sustainability benefits over their fossil based counterparts, such as a reduced CO2 footprint, reduced dependency on fossil resources, and additional end-of-life options. Bio-plastics can also offer improved functionalities and performance in many cases.

Over the last few years, many of the world’s largest consumer brands have begun to employ bioplastics in the packaging of their products. Examples include Procter and Gamble’s bioplastic shampoo packaging, Dannon’s PLA yoghurt cups, and Coca Cola’s plant bottle. R&D teams continue to work on new production processes that support the production commercialization of biochemicals and bioplastics made from alternative feedstocks, such as biomass (often referred to as cellulosic feedstocks or second generation feedstocks).

Industrial wood pellets can play a major role as a sustainable feedstock in this growing industry. These presentations and discussions will cover market potential, the status of leading technology and commercialization efforts, and how biomass feedstocks such as pellets can be sourced sustainably for these new markets.
